Eyes of The Atacama

Duration 52m

The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) is the largest observatory on Earth, strategically built on the high Chajnantor Plateau in the Chilean Andes, one of the driest places on the planet. This documentary explores the incredible engineering and international partnership required to assemble and operate massive radio antennas, which function as a single telescope to achieve unprecedented resolution. Unlike optical telescopes, ALMA observes millimeter and submillimeter radio waves, allowing it to penetrate the dark dust clouds that obscure the birth of stars and planets, like the newly discovered planets forming around the star Fomalhaut.
